No one likes a budget. But who doesn’t love a deal?

Everyone whose name isn’t Trump or Kardashian is trying to trim costs and save for a nice getaway or pay off the last of those holiday bills. And while you can probably fund a semicomfortable retirement by cutting out lattes, what fun is that?

Instead, here are eight ways to cinch your budget without pinching your lifestyle:

1. Get cheaper movies — legally. Want to enjoy movies at home without having to pay to buy them, rent them or store them until the current hot format goes extinct? With a Blu-ray player, gaming system or other streaming device (such as a $50 Roku box), you can watch a wide variety of free movies and programs that broadcasters (and sites like Hulu) are posting free online.

I like to cook for friends. But if I’m preparing a dish that might get a little messy and I reach for my chef’s apron that’s when the teasing starts. The only apron I have is a thick cotton carpenter’s apron with a Home Depot logo printed across the front.

What can I say? It’s sturdy canvas and can take lots of abuse. It has a few pockets where I can stash spice bottles, lemons, onions, or a list of my recipe ingredients. As long as I’m careful not to get leftover sawdust on anyone’s burgers it’s the ideal apron for grilling outdoors – which is really just a culinary do-it-yourself project, if you think about it.

When it comes to DIY projects Home Depot always has what I need. Plus the employees are experienced enough to help you solve problems with your projects, and the prices are always competitive.

The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday it would leave interest rates at rock bottom for at least another three years. But it also made history when it disclosed for the first time policymakers’ forecasts of what interest rates may be down the line.

The Fed’s announcement that it would leave the federal funds rate alone until at least late 2014 means that credit card holders won’t have to worry about a sudden rate hike any time soon. Most credit cards are variable rate cards, meaning they are tied to the prime rate, which is typically 3 percentage points above the federal funds rate. When the federal funds rate is raised, the annual percentage rates (APRs) of variable rate cards immediately go up as well. Beginning Wednesday, cardholders will also be able to see, for the first time in history, when individual members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) expect the federal funds rate to go up — or down.
